Although a sunset picture is pretty hard to mess up, this photo grabbed my attention as a “keeper” after I saw the balance of dark and light that my camera captured. It’s a theme that I find runs through my photography, albeit not by my design. Capturing photos during the golden and blue hours affords the opportunity to commit both light and darkness to the image.

This particular shot was taken at a local city park, right down the road from where I live. The park (which I will keep unnamed) has exploded in popularity in the last couple of years, due partially to the population explosion our area has seen. In years past, I could park in the lot and see only 2 or 3 cars; now, you’ll need to navigate and find a spot to pull into, regardless of the day or time of year.

After walking down the main trail for about 5 minutes, you happen upon a small lake, and on that particular day the scene was set perfectly with the sun disappearing over the tree line. I set my camera up with a high ISO and an almost wide-open aperture, and handheld the shot. I was amazed at how much I like the result once I processed the shot back home.

Cold, blue hues of the lake water mixed with the warm afterglow of the fading sun. Perfection, as I’m a sucker for anything that visually captures the feeling of warmth. I hope you find a bit of warmth to capture yourself :)
